Dr David Lonsdale
My area covers the security dimension. I’m researching whether state activities in cyberspace enhance or detract from the common good.
My Role and Expertise
I have been working in strategy and security studies for 15 years. Across the whole of that time I’ve been engaged with cybersecurity. This is evidenced by the following publications The Nature of War in the Information Age,Information Power: Strategy, Geopolitics and the Fifth Dimension, The Impact of Cyberspace on Strategy,Understanding Modern Warfare, and Understanding Contemporary Strategy. The area of cybersecurity presents both threats and opportunities for the common good. On the one hand, attacks against the Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII) threaten that which underpins the functioning of modern society. Thus, it is imperative that the state is able to protect the CNII from cyberwar, cyberespionage and cybercrime. On the other hand, cyberspace presents opportunities for projecting power in a non-violent manner, thereby potentially acting in support of the common good. However, even non-violent cyberactivity raises significant ethical dilemmas that must be accounted for.
